MOKENA, Ill. — After a pandemic-caused hiatus, the Village of Mokena’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display is returning to Main Park.
Village of Mokena Board of Trustees members voted 4-0 Monday, Feb. 28, to approve a contract with Pyrotecnico Fireworks Inc. for $25,800 for the fireworks display. Trustee George Metanias, who was serving as mayor pro-tem, did not vote, and Trustee Joseph Budzyn was absent.
According to Village documents, the 2022 fireworks display factors in a price increase of about 15% due to higher shipping costs. The Village memo also stated that the Mokena Community Park District agreed to split the cost of the display.
“I’m glad to see the fireworks returning to Main Park this year,” Trustee Rob Dauphinais said. “I think that’s a great place to have them and a great sense of community when they are there.”
Trustee Melissa Fedora agreed.
“I’m also thrilled to have the fireworks back in the center of town at Main Park,” she said. “I’m so glad that the Village and the park district will be working together on that, so we can have the fireworks right in the heart of town on July 4.”
Earlier in the meeting, the trustees unanimously approved the consent agenda, which included the reduction of a Class E liquor license as Doc’s Smokehouse and Craft Bar recently closed.
The meeting also marked the second in a row that Mayor Frank Fleischer was absent. According to a Village press release issued on Feb. 17, Fleischer fell at his home on Feb. 11 and received medical care at the hospital.
