TP Village Board members pass minor changes to zoning ordinance regulating extended stay hotels
Stricter regulations on extended stay hotels expected to be voted on at future Village Board meeting
TINLEY PARK, Ill. – Changes to the ordinance that sets rules for extended stay hotels located in the Village of Tinley Park were unanimously adopted 6-0 by the Village officials on Tuesday, July 19.
“The proposed text amendment defines and regulates extended stay hotels,” Trustee Michael Mueller said during the discussion. “Extended stay hotels are proposed to require special use permit approval in all zoning districts that currently permit hotels. The additional review will ensure extended stay hotels are properly located and operated in a safe and effective manner.”
According to Village documents provided in the board packet, the new definition for extended stay hotels is as follows:
“A hotel containing guest rooms for lodging, offered to the public for compensation, which are advertised, designed, intended or routinely utilized for weekly or monthly occupancy, or in which at least 30% of all guest rooms have facilities for the refrigeration and preparation of food by guests, such as a refrigerator and a cooktop/stove (or a refrigerator, a microwave, and a dishwasher or kitchenette sink), a cook-top/stove or microwave, and a dishwasher or sink, and a self-serve laundry facility is available for guests use.”
The approved changes also changed the definition for hotels, motels, or motor inns to mean “any public or private space or structure, including but not limited to, any inn, hostelry, tourist home, motel, bed, and breakfast, lodging house or motel rooming house offering space for sleeping or overnight accommodations in exchange for rent. Hotel includes the parking lot and other common areas of the hotel. Hotel does not include living accommodations provided at any governmental or nonprofit institution in connection with the functions of that institution.”
Meanwhile, Village Manager Pat Carr told Richard Free Press on Wednesday, July 20, that more changes to how the Village regulates extended stay hotels are anticipated to be voted on at a future board meeting.
